A Rich History Rooted in Nature and Spirituality
The story of Ceylon Ayurveda stretches back over 3,000 years when wise men, monks, and healers of Sri Lanka turned to the island's natural bounty to craft their remedies. This rich tradition flourished under the guardianship of ancient kings and the guiding principles of Buddhist teachings, which emphasize compassion and the symbiosis of all life.
In the early days, Ayurveda flourished through an oral tradition. Practitioners memorized vast collections of principles and remedies, and this precious knowledge was passed down through generations. This ensured that the wisdom of Ayurveda remained intact and evolved through the ages. Thanks to this careful transmission of invaluable wisdom, Ceylon Ayurveda has endured the test of time, despite the rise of modern medicine. Now celebrated globally, this ancient practice continues to offer authentic, natural solutions to modern health challenges.
Today’s practice of Ayurveda in Sri Lanka is a fascinating blend of ancient traditions. It evolved from Deshiya Chikitsa (indigenous medicine), and Indian Ayurveda, which made its way to Sri Lanka over many centuries. Later, Arab traders introduced Unani influences, enriching the tradition even further. This blend gave birth to Sri Lankan Ayurveda, a unique medical system that seamlessly incorporates local herbs, minerals, and spiritual practices into its holistic healing approach.
